Locals On Track For Perth's Railway

As Group 1 racing heads across the Nullarbor from Australia's eastern states to Western Australia for this Saturday's G1 Railway S. (1600m), five 'out-of-town' runners bring different form lines into the wide-open contest, but the locals look set to hold their own.

Leading Western Australian owner/breeder Bob Peters will be represented by five runners in this race, with his Group 1-winning 4-year-old mare Perfect Reflection (Aus) (More Than Ready {Aus}) currently the favoured runner of the quintet. Stablemate Disposition (Aus) (Reset ({Aus}), a runner-up to Perfect Reflection last time out in the G2 Lee Steere S., goes into the contest third-up and with a drop in weight, and the Group 1 performer could provide his Darley-based sire with his second elite-level victory this season and sixth overall.

Victorious in his last two starts including a one-length win in the G3 R.J. Peters S. (1500m) last Saturday, Scales Of Justice (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}) looks a leading contender to give his Arrowfield Stud-based sire back-to-back victories in the race.

Another of the local runners that appears to have a sense of timing about him is Tradesman (Aus) (Trade Fair {GB}) from the Robert and Todd Harvey yard. Unbeaten at the distance and never out of a place at the track, the 5-year-old comes into the race off a three-quarter length third to Perfect Reflection (Aus) and Disposition (Aus), while the most significant factor is the drop of six kilos.

One of the up-and-coming runners of the field is the Damien Oliver-ridden Mackintosh (NZ) (Pins ({Aus}), who will be peaking at his fourth run in his campaign. A winner first-up this campaign at Group 2 level, the 4-year-old Chris Waller-trainee finished a narrow third in the G1 Epsom behind Hauraki (Aus) before a fifth to Hard Spun's Le Romain (Aus) in the Cantala S. (1600m) and on paper appears the one to beat.

Arguably the most intriguing runner of the race is the New Zealand-bred and raced Kawi (NZ) (Savabeel {Aus}). A winner of 13 of his 27 starts, five at Group 1 level, the Allan Sharrock-trained gelding has had one prep run in the west, beaten over three lengths into fourth behind Perfect Reflection, and will need to find a length or two to record the win.

The Chris Waller-trained Good Project (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}) has remained winless since his victory 12 months prior, and while his last two Victorian starts were satisfactory, it is hard to recommend him on form.
