Lim's Cruiser Gets Through to Win EW Barker at Kranji

Lim's Cruiser | Singapore Turf Club

With Mauritian-born, South African-trained jockey Karis Teetan in the plate, Lim's Cruiser (Aus) (Casino Prince {Aus}) took full advantage of his feathery weight, slicing through an opening at the inside en route to victory in Friday's EW Barker Trophy at Kranji.

The 5 1/2-length winner of a Class 4 over 1600 metres Aug. 19, Lim's Cruiser made it two on the hop with a facile success in a 1400-metre Class 3 Sept. 18, but was only third as the 2-5 chalk in a course-and-distance test when last seen Oct. 14.

Carrying saddle towel number 16, but drawn low in gate two, Lim's Cruiser–blinkered for the first time–bounced fairly and took up a spot in centerfield, but handy enough, as Jay Eff Express (Aus) (Murtajill {Aus}) was bustled along by Glen Boss to cross and clear the field from barrier 15. In traffic and inclined to overrace beneath Teetan, Lim's Cruiser tugged for his head, but raced three back on the rail awaiting for room as Jay Eff Express turned them in. The longshot remained the leader into the final 400 metres, but had vacated the inside just enough to entice Teetan into a daring rails bid with about a furlong to travel. At first appearing somewhat hesitant to go through, Lim's Cruiser eventually bought into the plan, hit the front and edged clear late. Magnum (NZ) (Per Incanto), last for the opening 1000 metres, weaved his way through traffic to just earn third prize. Alibi (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}), the mount of Joao Moreira and favored at 6-5, loomed a threat in the lane, but could not see it out and finished fifth.

“I had a lot of confidence in this horse. He's such a nice horse,” said Teetan at his very first post-race TV interview at Kranji. “He gave me a good feeling in the run, but I was three or four metres off the rail in the back, and he was a bit keen. But luckily, he then dropped his head and came back underneath me. I had committed to the run on the inside and couldn't pull back. I had to hold my fire as I couldn't get a run and I was pretty scared he wouldn't quicken away because of that. But once he found daylight, he lengthened up very well for a very nice solid win. He's the type of horse who will keep improving with more racing.” Click for the Singapore Turf Club chart. VIDEO.
