'Light' On Her Feet

Lightstream | Coady

Lightstream (Harlan's Holiday), last seen finishing a close second in Saratoga's GI Test S. Aug. 6, returned to the site of her GIII Adena Springs Beamont S. victory in April to annex Keeneland's GII Lexus Raven Run S. Saturday. Longshots Malibu Stacy (Tizway) and Coniah (Harlington) spiced up the trifecta at 40-1 and 34-1, respectively.

The 24-10 race favorite broke alertly from her outside stall, but was soon outrun and seemed to be climbing a bit as she traveled in the back half of the field and off the inside. She started to rev up after a half in :45.30, and tipped wide into the lane as Malibu Stacy and Coniah fought it out in upper stretch. Chipping away at her foes' advantages while on her wrong lead, the bay leveled off nicely in the waning stages to pull clear by 1 1/4 lengths.

“She broke good. I saved ground a little bit on the turn and came around and she made that big run of hers,” offered rider Julien Leparoux, who had piloted Lightstream in her first two starts, but not in her last three. “She really impressed me on the turn when I asked her. She really took off, which actually made me go wider than I wanted to. But she got the job done.”

Lightstream earned a gaudy 103 Beyer Speed Figure when besting eventual 'TDN Rising Star' and stakes winner Kareena (Medaglia d'Oro) on debut at Gulfstream Mar. 6, prompting the Sol Kumin-led Head of Plains Partners to acquire an interest in her from Leonard Zenith's Up Hill Stable.

That investment was immediately rewarded when Lightstream ran down GISW Nickname (Scat Daddy) in the Beaumont, and she went three-for-three while testing the turf in Belmont's Soaring Softly S. May 21. Third when stretching out for the GI Mother Goose S. back at Big Sandy July 2, Lightstream rallied into a quick pace in the Test and looked on her way to victory before getting collared late by 55-1 outsider Paola Queen (Flatter).
