Letter to the Editor: Ann Hanley

Dear friends and especially Tom and Katie Ryan,

Thank you for your wonderful support for the Ann Hanley Parkinson's Research Fund. Tom and Katie ran their socks off to raise $125K for the gofundme page and every cent raised goes to helping Dr. Craig van Horne and his team at UK continue with their groundbreaking work to find a cure for this disease.

I always believed that a cure was a “pipe dream” and to live with an incurable disease is more than a death sentence…it's a living nightmare; that is, until the research at UK, a one-of-a-kind surgical intervention, implanting nerve grafts into target areas of the brain to kick start the repair mechanism started to show positive results.

We are still a ways off from our goal to cure this disease, but now there is hope and more–so much more. When we the patients had nothing–no future to look forward to–plans gone up in smoke, lives disrupted in a landscape of despair, we now have hope and hope is everything. It keeps us steady and moving forward.

Each of you who contributed to the cause has literally saved a life. What an amazing achievement! Congratulations to you all and a big heartfelt thank you.

Editor's Note: Tom and Katie Ryan raised over $125,000 for the Ann Hanley Parkin's Research Fund at the University of Kentucky by raising donations to support their run in the Fall Foliage Half Marathon in Rhinebeck, NY. Further donations to the cause may be sent to: Ann Hanley Parkinson's Research, 2605 Payne's Mill Rd., Versailles, KY, 40383.
