Juddmonte On Top Of The World

Prince Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms has enjoyed a remarkable season in 2017 even by it's own standards. For a time it could claim both the top-rated horse in America (and the world) in defending GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner Arrogate (Unbridled's Song), and in the highest-rated horse in Europe in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-winning filly Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) Enable was surpassed in the ratings by her John Gosden-trained stablemate Cracksman (GB) (Frankel {GB}) after he won the G1 Champion S. on Oct. 21, but remains Europe's highest-rated female. Juddmonte Racing Manager Teddy Grimthorpe is at Del Mar to watch Arrogate, as well as Juddmonte fillies Paulassilverlining (Ghostzapper) and Grand Jete (GB) (Dansili {GB}) run at the Breeders' Cup, and he took some time out to talk TDN's Kelsey Riley about his favourite things to do in Del Mar as well as the Juddmonte stable stars.

KR: How have you been enjoying Del Mar, and what do you like to do in your spare time down time here?

TG: I love coming back to Del Mar. I used to come here a lot as a bloodstock agent. Not quite so much with Juddmonte, but it's a wonderful place to come. I think the great thing about the whole coast–we used to go down to San Diego, down to Tijuana, Rosarita Beach, all those things, we had a great time. It's a fun place to go out and eat and enjoy music.

KR: Juddmonte has the top-rated horse in America this year in Arrogate and for a time Enable was the top-rated horse in Europe. Has Prince Khalid and his family been enjoying that this season?

TG: Yes, we got downed by a Frankel [Cracksman]. It's been very important to the Prince. Arrogate was a purchase so that was a slightly new thing but for the horse to become so successful has been really remarkable. Of course Enable is a fourth generation Juddmonte homebred so that's particularly special. The Prince has been just enthralled by them.

KR: Enable has of course been put away for the year now, but how is she doing?

TG: She's doing really well. She's relaxed, I saw her last week, and she's just cool. I think she spends more time with Frankie Dettori now. She will chill out over the winter and hopefully we'll bring her back and have an interesting campaign next year. She'll stay at [John Gosden's over the winter]–some fillies it suits and some it doesn't, and we just felt the way she came out of the Arc, in great shape and doing well, she's happy where she is, so why move her?

KR: Have you been happy with Arrogate since he shipped to Del Mar?

TG: Yes, we saw him this morning with Garrett [O'Rourke] and Bob [Baffert], and he seems to be in good shape. He's done well and he's got his good weight back, everything like that, so you have to be very excited.
