Juddmonte Filly Comes Flying Late to Take GP Debut

4th-GP, $51,000, Msw, 4-2, 3yo, f, 1 1/8mT, 1:52.28, fm.

+WESSEX (f, 3, Unbridled's Song–Hachita, by Gone West) was sent off at 9-1 in this career bow despite her conditioner Bill Mott's hot streak since the quarantine was lifted at his winter base at Payson Park. Away well from her inside draw, the gray tracked from a ground-saving third as 16-1 shot Tizthesound (Tiz Wonderful) ticked off early splits of :24.03 and :49.89. That rival was well clear turning for home and looked like she would go on with it in the lane, but Wessex was just finding her best stride. Tipped out two wide in late stretch, she swept up the pacesetter's outside and sailed clear with ears pricked to win by a length under Jose Lezcano. Tizthesound stayed on for second. The winner is a half to Announce (GB) (Selkirk), G1SW-Fr, $547,607; and Mexican Gold (Medaglia d'Oro); GSW & G1SP-Fr, $142,810. Her dam produced juvenile filly Pachinko (Tapit), a yearling colt by First Defence and just recently foaled a Tapit colt. This is also the family of European champion Zafonic (Gone West) and GSW & G1SP Zamindar (Gone West). Mott also had a maiden winner Friday at Aqueduct with Lost Iron (Flatter); and won three stakes last Saturday, taking the GII Santa Ana S. with Tuttipaesi (Ire) (Clovodil {Ire}), the GII Mervin Muniz Memorial S. with Take the Stand (Arg) (Not for Sale {Arg}), and the Sanibel Island H. with Harmonize (Scat Daddy). Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $30,000. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
