TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Yearling CGalileo (Ire)--Alexander Goldrun (Ire)950,000
    Breeder: Noel O'Callaghan (Ire)
    Buyer: Demi O'Byrne
    Consignor: Mountarmstrong Stud
The first foal produced by five-time Group 1 winner Alexander Goldrun (Ire) (Gold Away {Ire}), a Jan. 28 foal by Galileo (Ire), pranced around the Tattersalls pavilion for the better part of 10 minutes as potential buyers thought very carefully about making that next bid. In the end, John Magnier emerged victorious on a final offer of 950,000gns (about $1,596,362) for the colt, bred by Noel O'Callaghan and consigned by Mountarmstrong Stud. Bloodstock agent Anani Antonaidis, bidding on behalf of a Russian client, was the immediate underbidder, and looked for a moment like he'd secured the colt at 700,000gns. In jumped Magnier at 725,000gns and the two traded punches until Antonaidis smiled and walked away following Magnier's final bid. Trained throughout her career by Jim Bolger, Alexander Goldrun registered a breakthrough Group 1 success in the 2004 G1 Prix de l'Opera and followed that up with an historic victory in the G1 Hong Kong Cup. She retained outstanding form at four, adding the G1 Pretty Polly S. and G1 Nassau S. and successfully defended her Pretty Polly title in 2006.
