TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Yearling FGalileo (Ire)--Secret Garden (Ire)925,000
    Breeder: Swettenham Stud
    Buyer: Blandford Bloodstock
    Consignor: Voute Sales Ltd (agent)
If the full-sister to Together (Ire) was the day's main course, hip 242, another own sister to a top-class horse in MG1SW Roderic O'Connor (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was certainly a tasty appetizer, as Blandford Bloodstock's Tom Goff outlasted a number of would-be suitors on a final bid of 925,000gns (about $1,554,802). American buyer Jon Kelly surprised most everyone in the ring with an opening offer of 500,000gns, and seemed to have tried to bow out at 820,000gns after dueling with fellow American Marc Keller to the 800,000gns mark. He re-engaged with a final try at 850,000gns before stepping away for good following an 875,000gns bid from Goff. Cheveley Park's Chris Richardson got involved and took the proceedings to 900,000gns before Goff closed things out. "She is for a long-standing client of Blandford, and was an absolute outstanding physical," said Goff. "She was very mature for a relatively late foal and a fantastic walker. I didn't see her until yesterday, but fell in love with her straight away. When she came up to the pre-parade ring she really showed herself off, I could watch her all day!" A May 1 foal, remarkably the same foaling date as hip 249, the bay is out of Secret Garden (Ire) (Danehill) and is bred on the same cross responsible for none other than Frankel (GB).
