In a renewal of the Sapporo Kinen that proved a Group 2 only by name, a pair of G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe contenders were out to stretch their legs, and it was the G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) heroine Harp Star who took advantage of a significant weight break to overhaul dual G1 Takarazuka Kinen victor Gold Ship. Never worse than second in her six-race career, Harp Star suffered her first defeat in last year’s G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies, but bounced back to win the G3 Tulip Sho and the Oka Sho in her first two outings of the year. She missed by just a quarter-length when stretched beyond a mile for the first time in the 12 furlong G1 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) when last seen May 25. Traveling next to last with just Gold Ship in arrears through the opening splits here, Harp Star began to rapidly pick off rivals rounding the turn, with Gold Ship in hot pursuit. The pair entered the straight on near-even terms, but Harp Star had enough in reserve to kick clear once again and score by a cozy three-quarters of a length. Harp Star is a current 12-1 chance for the Oct. 5 Arc, while Gold Ship is 20-1. Their compatriot Just A Way (Jpn) (Heart’s Cry {Jpn}) is the 10-1 fourth choice.
