Close Hatches Takes BC Distaff Rematch in Phipps

7th at BELGI Ogden Phipps S. ($1m)  [1 11/6m]Winner: Close Hatches, f, 4 by First Defence
Sent off the 5-2 third choice in a clash of the country's three best older females, Juddmonte Farms' TDN Rising Star Close Hatches got first run on arch-rival Princess of Sylmar (Majestic Warrior) entering the stretch and outfought the 2013 GI Kentucky Oaks heroine for a narrow victory in the GI Ogden Phipps S., the first of the three seven-figure races at Belmont Park Saturday afternoon. Drawn inside in this field of six, Close Hatches, front-running winner of the GIII Azeri S. and GI Apple Blossom H. in her two trips to the post this season, was somewhat surprisingly taken back off a suicidal early pace and raced just to the inside of dual champion Beholder (Henny Hughes) down the backstretch. Given a bit of rein by Rosario, Close Hatches was the first to come after the leaders, but she was slipstreamed by Beholder, who in turn had Princess of Sylmar just in her wake. Close Hatches was first to turn and soon had Beholder alongside, but the latter appeared one-paced at the furlong marker. That left Princess of Sylmar to try to get to Close Hatches, but she could quite get to the Bill Mott trainee and fell a short-head shy in the waning strides. Antipathy (A.P. Indy) boxed on gamely for third.
