Bayern Kicks Away in Woody Stephens

5th at BELGII Woody Stephens S. ($500k)  [7f]Winner: Bayern, c, 3 by Offlee Wild
Kaleem Shah Inc's TDN Rising Star Bayern, unplaced behind California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) in the GI Preakness S. last time out, made a successful return to the one-turn brand of racing Saturday, streaking away to an impressive five-length victory in the GII Woody Stephens S. at Belmont Park. Drawn on the fence in a talent-laden field, Bayern was outfooted to the lead by Pure Sensation (Zensational) but pushed through to lead into the turn. Always traveling well for Gary Stevens, he braced for a challenge from even-money Social Inclusion (Pioneerof the Nile), but repelled that bid and sprinted clear. California raider and GIII Laz Barrera S. upsetter Top Fortitude (Top Hit) claimed second on the wire from Social Inclusion, with Kobe's Back (Flatter) a slow-starting fourth. Final time for the seven furlongs was a swift 1:20.75. Tabbed a Rising Star off a smashing 15-length maiden victory going a two-turn mile at Santa Anita Feb. 13, Bayern, a $320,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic juvenile, was third as the favorite in the Apr. 12 GI Arkansas Derby, missing a shot at the GI Kentucky Derby in the process. He took his spot instead in the GIII Derby Trial S. Apr. 26 and found the wire narrowly first, only to be demoted to second behind Embellishing Bob (Northern Afleet).
