The TDN Topic is a new feature for the TDN, designed to examine a topic in racing from several different angles, and then seek comment from our readers. In each TDN Topic, we ask people with different perspectives—from both inside and outside the sport—to comment on a hot-button issue. Today, we start with whipping.

3rd at SAXMsw ($56k)  [5f]Winner: Heart of Paradise, f, 2 by More Than Ready
Hoefflin, Todaro and Hollendorfer’s Heart of Paradise (f, 2, More Than Ready--Paradise Playgirl, by Speightstown) displayed a worktab dotted with strong works at Barretts Sales and Racing and over the local strip and was dispatched the 5-2 second choice to open her account at first asking in Thursday’s third race at Santa Anita. Fastest into stride for Corey Nakatani, the $145,000 Keeneland September graduate showed the way from C’Mon Sister (Successful Appeal) through an opening couple of furlongs in :21.97. The latter tried to take it to the pacesetter nearing the stretch, but Heart of Paradise turned back that bid and pulled away in the lane to score by about four lengths, covering the five furlongs in a rock-solid :57.76. Soft-in-the-market Bennett Jean (Smart Strike) came from well back to be second at odds of 6-1. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0. O-Hoefflin, Todaro or Hollendorfer. B-Pollock Farms (KY). T-Jerry Hollendorfer. Click for the chart or VIDEO.
