The TDN Topic is a new feature for the TDN, designed to examine a topic in racing from several different angles, and then seek comment from our readers. In each TDN Topic, we ask people with different perspectives—from both inside and outside the sport—to comment on a hot-button issue. Today, we start with whipping.

RING WEEKEND needed five tries to break his maiden--doing so in his latest at Gulfstream Feb. 8--but had no problem in his first attempt against winners here, leading gate-to-wire as a 14-1 longshot. The gelding, a $310,000 KEESEP grad, was sent hard from the rail draw by Daniel Centeno and cut out legitimate splits of :23 3/5 and :46 3/5. He opened a huge eight-length heading into the far turn, and despite running greenly in the stretch, was always in command and won by three or four lengths. GIII Sam F. Davis S. winner Vinceramos (Pioneerof the Nile) was second. Surfing U S A (Roman Ruler) finished third, with favored Conquest Titan (Birdstone) in fourth.
