The TDN Topic is a new feature for the TDN, designed to examine a topic in racing from several different angles, and then seek comment from our readers. In each TDN Topic, we ask people with different perspectives—from both inside and outside the sport—to comment on a hot-button issue. Today, we start with whipping.

8th at AQUJimmy Winkfield S. ($100k)  [6f]Winner: Hot Heir Skier, c, 3 by Wildcat Heir
New Farm homebred Hot Heir Skier (c, 3, Wildcat Heir--Uphill Skier, by Appealing Skier) held on for a 3/4-length victory despite drifting out late in Monday’s Jimmy Winkfield S. at Aqueduct. The 5-2 shot raced between rivals in a three-way battle for the lead through fractions of :22.92 and :46.52. He kicked clear of Oliver Zip (City Zip) in upper stretch and looked home free before racing erratically, as Oliver Zip rerallied to just miss and Charleymillionaire (Sky Mesa) closed for third in a tight finish. Hot Heir Skier, who was coming off a 3 1/4-length maiden win at Laurel Dec. 26, completed the six furlongs in 1:11.25.
