Longshot Spellbound Gets Up in La Canada

8th at SAXGII La Canada S. ($200K)  [1 1/16m]Winner: Spellbound, f, 4 by Bernardini
Spellbound (Bernardini) came from the clouds to take the lead in the shadow of the wire in Sunday’s GII La Canada S. at Santa Anita. The bay filly, dismissed at 16-1, was unhurried out of the gate and soon trailed the field as favored Broken Sword (Broken Vow) rushed up to set the pace. The favorite pulled her way through fractions of :22.86 and :45.47. Ondine (Medaglia d’Oro) moved to challenge Broken Sword leaving the backstretch, while Spellbound was some 14 lengths back of the leaders. Broken Sword and Ondine turned for home in tandem after three-quarters in 1:09.66, but the favorite was wilting. Ondine took over at midstretch and was grimly holding off Let Faith Arise (Kafwain), but Spellbound was finding her best gear in the center of the track and surged to the lead in the final stride. Let Faith Arise got a neck in front of the game Ondine in a blanket finish, with Fiftyshadesofhay (Pulpit) a half-length back in fourth. “She’s always been a talented filly, but was a little backwards early, in her first races, rough in the gate, just not doing things right,” explained winning trainer Richard Mandella. “Just little by little, she’s come around. She trained really well for this race, the allowance race didn’t go, so we went here.”
