The TDN Topic is a new feature for the TDN, designed to examine a topic in racing from several different angles, and then seek comment from our readers. In each TDN Topic, we ask people with different perspectives—from both inside and outside the sport—to comment on a hot-button issue. Today, we start with whipping.

8th at SAXGI Malibu S. ($300k)  [7f]Winner: Shakin It Up, c, 3 by Midnight Lute
Shakin It Up (c, 3, Midnight Lute--Silver Bullet Moon, by Vindication), unraced since finishing fourth in the Mar. 24 GIII Sunland Derby, got up late for a determined 3/4-length victory over Central Banker (Speightstown) in the GI Malibu S. at Santa Anita Thursday. Let go at 17-1, Shakin It Up settled near the back of the pack as Distinctiv Passion (With Distinction) took the field through fractions of :21.66 and :43.33. Central Banker got to the front first, but Shakin It Up was just to his outside and he forged determinedly to the lead in the shadow of the wire. Zeewat (Harlan’s Holiday) was third. The time for the seven furlongs was 1:20.53. Shakin It Up, a maiden winner over this track last October, won the GII San Vicente S. in February. Lifetime Record: 6-3-1-1, $367,600. O-Cardoza & Pegram. B-Michael Pegram (Ky). T-Bob Baffert.
