The TDN Topic is a new feature for the TDN, designed to examine a topic in racing from several different angles, and then seek comment from our readers. In each TDN Topic, we ask people with different perspectives—from both inside and outside the sport—to comment on a hot-button issue. Today, we start with whipping.

4th at BHPMsw ($45K)  [7 1/2f (AW)]Winner: Midnight Hawk, c, 2 by Midnight Lute
MIDNIGHT HAWK (c, 2, Midnight Lute--Miss Wineshine, by Wolf Power {SAf}) made his 6-5 debut odds look like a gift despite a very eventful journey. Falling out of the gate to spot the field several lengths, the grey tugged his way up to lead before settling into third just off the pace while well off the rail. He came with a three-wide bid to assert at the top of the lane and, despite giving pilot Mike Smith a tough time as he tried repeatedly to bear in towards the rail, kicked home a head-turning six-length winner in 1:29.26. Snuggley Bear (Sharp Humor) was second. Midnight Hawk is owned in partnership by Chicago Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville and assistant coach Mike Kitchen, former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Tice, Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm’s John Sikura and breeder Mike Pegram. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $27,000. Click for the chart or the VIDEO.
