Matador made his racetrack debut with a fourth-place effort over the main track in the Aug. 11 Vandal S. before moving to the lawn for a third-place effort behind My Conquestadory (Artie Schiller) in the Sept. 14 GII Summer S. The bay colt took the lead early on the backstretch and battled Cool Faith through fractions of :24.89, :48.16 and 1:13.28. He looked to put that filly away at the top of the lane, but Cool Faith battled back bravely and the two juveniles went head to head to the wire with Matador just eking out a narrow victory. “We’ve had great hopes for this horse and he really came through today,” said Kathryn Sullivan, assistant to winning trainer Mark Casse. “I mean, he just did not give up at all. I wasn’t really sure [who had won]. She just kept coming back on. But it was a great race.” Click for the chart or VIDEO.
