The TDN Topic is a new feature for the TDN, designed to examine a topic in racing from several different angles, and then seek comment from our readers. In each TDN Topic, we ask people with different perspectives—from both inside and outside the sport—to comment on a hot-button issue. Today, we start with whipping.

SURFER GIRL S., $100,000, 2yo, f, 1mT, 1:34 1/5, fm.
CLENOR (IRE) (f, 2, Oratorio {Ire}--Chantarella {Ire}), by Royal Academy) remained unbeaten in three stateside starts with another eye-catching effort here. Group 3-placed as a maiden in Ireland before coming to California this past July, she won off by 2 1/2 lengths in a grassy one-mile maiden at Del Mar Aug. 7 and had 3 1/4 lengths on the competition when stepped up into the Juvenile Fillies Turf S. Sept. 2. The prohibitive 3-5 choice sat fourth last as South Sound (Stroll) ensured a rapid pace. Nesso (Roman Ruler) made an aggressive move to the front on the turn, but Clenor, rallying wide, came with a sustained rally and wore her in the final eighth to prevail by a length. Colonel Joan (Colonel John) put in a strong late run for third. Lifetime Record: 6-3-0-1.
O-Great Friends Stable; B-Mrs Lucy Stack (Ire); T-Doug O’Neill.
