The TDN Topic is a new feature for the TDN, designed to examine a topic in racing from several different angles, and then seek comment from our readers. In each TDN Topic, we ask people with different perspectives—from both inside and outside the sport—to comment on a hot-button issue. Today, we start with whipping.

Empire Maker's Emollient Changes Tactics, Still Wins GI Juddmonte Spinster

8th at KEEGI Juddmonte Spinster S.  [1 1/8m (AW)]Winner: Emollient, f, 3 by Empire Maker
Sunday, Keeneland
JUDDMONTE SPINSTER S.-GI, $500,000, 3yo/up, f/m, 1 1/8m (AWT), 1:47 3/5, ft.
EMOLLIENT (f, 3, Empire Maker--Soothing Touch, by Touch Gold) employed entirely different tactics than she did when winning the GI Ashland S. here by nine lengths this spring, but got the same result: a Grade I win at Keeneland. In front at every call in the Ashland, Emollient looked nearly disinterested here as she dropped back to the back of the pack under regular rider Mike Smith. She began to pick it up heading into the far turn, however, and unleashed a huge five-wide run nearing the quarter pole. She made the front at the eighth pole and easily outfinished Summer Applause (Harlan’s Holiday) for the 1 3/4-length win. The Spinster is a “Win and You’re In” race for the GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Empire Maker, who stood at Juddmonte before being sold to Japanese interests, has owned this race as a sire in recent years. He has now accounted for four of the last five runnings, including In Lingerie (‘12), Acoma (‘10) and Mushka (‘09).
