Smartyfly locked horns with favored Spring in the Air in this final leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara, and was able to shake free only in the final strides to earn her storied connection another Classic trophy in a race that was marred by the fatal breakdown of Woodbine Oaks winner Nipissing. Despite taking three tries to break her maiden last year, Smartyfly showed promise from the start, missing by a nose on debut last fall over the Woodbine Poly before finishing third in the Princess Elizabeth S. She got off the mark at the Etobicoke oval Nov. 25, and resurfaced with a flat 11th place finish in her lone turf try at Keeneland Apr. 7. She was second to Spring in the Air when dropping back to seven panels in Woodbine’s Fury S. May 4, and checked in fourth behind Nipissing and Spring in the Air in the Woodbine Oaks. Smartyfly prepared for this with a second place effort in the June 30 Bison City S. Holding a slight advantage with Spring in the Air breathing down her neck through the early stages, Smartyfly set soft fractions and had to dig deep inside the final sixteenth to see off her tenacious rival. Nipissing injured a hind leg heading into the far turn and was pulled up. She was vanned off and euthanized at the barn.
