Starting out with a fourth placing in a seven-furlong maiden at Gowran Park May 8, Wilshire Boulevard went close to breaking his maiden over a furlong shorter at Navan a month later, and made it count at the third attempt back there six days later. Unplaced in the Listed Windsor Castle S. reverting to five at Royal Ascot last time June 18, the bay bounced back to lead home a one-two-three for his owners, and provide trainer Aidan O’Brien with an eighth renewal. Restrained by Seamus Heffernan early, he was forced to race wide tracking the leading trio, but had plenty in reserve when the button was pushed inside the final quarter. Heading his favored front-running stable companion Oklahoma City soon after, he quickly asserted and was always containing his brave rally against the fence, with Mansion House staying on to fill the trifecta for the Coolmore triumvirate. “He’s been showing us plenty at home and wasn’t beaten too far at Ascot, so this wasn’t a surprise,” jockey Seamus Heffernan said. “I was in a great position and his experience stood him in good stead in an honest race. Holy Roman Emperors can be a little disappointing, but they are tough, and if you persevere long enough with them they will deliver in one big race somewhere. If he learns to relax, he could get a bit further--he’s a half-brother to Zoffany, who improved.”
