Gervinho kicked off his career with a come-from-behind victory going 5 1/2 furlongs over Del Mar’s Polytrack Sept. 3 before adding another win in the one-mile Zuma Beach S. on the Santa Anita lawn Oct. 8. Appearing he might get the job done in the Nov. 3 GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, the bay faded late to finish fifth--beaten 2 3/4 lengths--behind winner George Vancouver (Ire) (Henrythenavigator). Well-supported in his seasonal return in the Silky Sullivan S. at Golden Gate June 9, he came from just off the pace to finish a good second. Breaking from the inside here, Gevinho was settled back in fifth through an opening quarter mile in :22.61. Waiting to find some room as they approached the quarter pole, he followed suit as Freakin Rocket (Rock Hard Ten) accelerated heading into the turn. Swung out into the four path at the head of the lane, Gevinho took over in midstretch and was able to fend off the flying Greeley Awesome at the wire. Freakin Rocket held on for third.
