Nellie Cashman certainly didn’t look like a future graded stakes winner in five fruitless tries sprinting on the main track, but she showed marked improvement when switched to the Pimlico lawn to finish second May 17. She went on to crush fellow Keystone State-breds by 5 1/4 lengths at Penn National June 21, but wasn’t given much of a chance by the bettors here while attempting a major step up in class. Making the lead rather easily, Nellie Cashman was reined in by pilot Forest Boyce to concede the early advantage to Three Hearts. She re-engaged and put a head in front as they straightened, but the pacesetter dug in and seemed en route to victory as Nellie Cashman took a few awkward steps towards the grandstand. Quickly righting the ship, the dark bay wrestled the lead back late to blow up the tote.
