The lightly raced Schiaparelli, a daughter of the lawnmower Cambiocorsa, was an impressive winner going down the hill in a $62,500 optional tagger at Santa Anita Mar. 14, and continues to step up her game with each attempt since. The gray gave Mizdirection (Mizzen Mast) a good run for her money when second in the GIII Las Cienegas S. Apr. 13, and reached a career high over this course in the six-furlong Great Lady M. S. last time May 26. Attempting two turns for the first time here, she was hounded by Egg Drop through a half mile in :46.74. With Joe Talamo aboard, the Ran Jan Racing homebred began to shake clear at the top of the stretch, and had enough left in the tank to hold her rival safe. "She did what she was supposed to do, and I think with a legitimate pace,” trainer Mike Puype said. “The first fraction looked like it was going to be a walk, but you could see them accelerate. They put up some sprint numbers. Maybe the last sixteenth wasn't quite as good as the rest of the race, but it didn't matter, she did what she needed to do. I don't know what we're going to do next, but we'll probably keep her long on turf."
