The TDN Topic is a new feature for the TDN, designed to examine a topic in racing from several different angles, and then seek comment from our readers. In each TDN Topic, we ask people with different perspectives—from both inside and outside the sport—to comment on a hot-button issue. Today, we start with whipping.

Back on just seven days’ rest, Starship Truffles gave her sire a memorable one-two in the GI Princess Rooney H. Acquired by current connections last September, the bay filly was second in an off-turf starter-allowance in her first go for the barn, but proceeded to reel off five straight wins, including an 8 1/4-length victory in a Feb. 15 optional-tagger at Gulfstream Park. Only ninth against Aubby K (Street Sense) in the GII Inside Information S. Mar. 17, she stretched out to a route of ground, but could only finish second in a Mar. 31 starter test in Hallandale. The 1 1/2-length winner of the Musical Romance S. in the local slop Apr. 20, Starship Truffles bounced badly and was sixth in the U Can Do It H. June 8, jeopardizing a shot at this event. Trainer Marty Wolfson put her on trial in a June 29 optional claimer/starter allowance, and she earned the chance to come back on short rest with a 10-length score for apprentice Edgard Zayas. Forwardly placed here while three off the inside, Starship Truffles tugged Zayas to the lead at the three-eighths marker, and the team had a couple of lengths on her rivals as they cornered. She switched her leads in upper stretch and was ridden mostly hands and heels the remainder. Judy the Beauty was one of the last to leave the stalls and appeared to struggle a bit down the backside. But she kept to her task and stayed on well to be second.
