Mico Margarita got the ideal set-up in front of him and stormed past dueling pacesetters for a breakthrough graded-stakes success. A maiden winner and never off the board in five starts at two, Mico Margarita plugged away into second in a sloppy Oaklawn allowance Mar. 10, but could do no better than a well-backed sixth in a similar test in Hot Springs Apr. 12. He clipped heels and dropped jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. sprinting over the Churchill Downs turf course May 24, but bounced back from that disappointment in style, defeating older rivals in a main-track sprint in Louisville June 14. The complexion of the Carry Back changed a bit at the break, when favored R Free Roll (Rockport Harbor), impressive winner of the Unbridled S. June 8, hopped, allowing Rockyshomerun to dictate early on. R Free Roll was guided out to the two path to chase, and the duo threw down early with an opening quarter in :21.35. Mico Margarita, about four or five off the rail to the turn, began to reel those two in following an opening four furlongs in a taxing :44.33. In front nearing the eighth pole, the Asmussen runner ran out an easy winner, as Red Rocket Express outfinished Sr. Quisqueyano for second.
