Unsighted since her disappointing effort when unplaced in the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile in November, “TDN Rising Star” Moonlight Cloud was back in business in this race she had first plundered in 2011 and which serves as a warm-up for a try at winning a third renewal of the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville Aug. 4. Waited with in rear with only two behind early, the bay was asked the question inside the final quarter mile and delivered her customary deadly acceleration to swoop on Amarillo passing the furlong marker and win with utter authority. So accomplished around this circuit, the homebred is now five-for-seven around here including the latest renewal of the G1 Prix du Moulin prior to her rare off-day at Santa Anita. Trainer Freddy Head made no secret of his admiration for her afterwards. “She is a dream to train and is all class,” he said. “She has not run for eight months and put in a bad run at the Breeders’ Cup, so I was a little bit concerned but she did it nicely. I think she’s done better physically from four to five than from three to four and probably needed it today, as she was a bit fresh. That will have done her a lot of good and we’ll stick to the plan and try and win the Maurice de Gheest for a third time.”
