HOY Wise Dan Outclasses GII Firecracker Rivals

9th at CDXGII Firecracker H.  [1m (T)]Winner: Wise Dan, g, 6 by Wiseman's Ferry
Saturday, Churchill Downs
FIRECRACKER H.-GII, $150,000, 3yo/up, 1mT,
1:39 4/5, yl.
WISE DAN (g, 6, Wiseman’s Ferry--Lisa Danielle, by Wolf Power {SAf}) was sportingly kept in the race despite a heavy, persistent rain that turned the Churchill sod into a bog, and the reigning Horse of the Year treated fans to a display class and heart. Hammered down to 1-5 favoritism under John Velazquez, Wise Dan was hemmed in along the hedge just behind the pacesetting Seruni (Saint Liam), with longshot Ol Army (Posse) and second choice Lea (First Samurai) to his outside. Crying out for room as they rounded the far turn, Wise Dan slipped through a narrow opening to Seruni’s inside in upper stretch, and fought his way past that foe, who bumped him a few times in the process. Finally clear at the eighth pole, he edged away under a stiff drive as Lea came along for place honors.
