This race served as a coming out party for subsequent GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. hero Majesticperfection (Harlan’s Holiday) three years ago, and may prove to have again featured some major players in the sprint division as the year goes on. While Delaunay came in off a six-race win streak--having most recently annexed the GII Churchill Downs S. May 4--it was unlucky number seven for the Maggi Moss colorbearer, who couldn’t quite make up for a stumble at the start against a promising opponent in Gentlemen’s Bet. The latter began his career with three wins from as many tries, but settled for third on black-type debut after dueling through hot fractions in Oaklawn’s GIII Count Fleet H. Apr. 13. He dropped down into a confidence-building Churchill allowance May 17, and blitzed a solid field by 5 3/4 lengths, earning a 107 Beyer Speed Figure. With the chalk relegated to last early, Gentlemen’s Bet enjoyed the run of the race on the inside just off the speed. He asserted with Delaunay on his right flank leaving the turn, and ultimately wore down that stubborn foe close to home. Click for the chart or VIDEO.
