The TDN Topic is a new feature for the TDN, designed to examine a topic in racing from several different angles, and then seek comment from our readers. In each TDN Topic, we ask people with different perspectives—from both inside and outside the sport—to comment on a hot-button issue. Today, we start with whipping.

Curragh, 17.25, Mdn, €16,500, 2yo, f, 7fT, 1:25.36, gd/fm.
+AVENUE GABRIEL (GB) (f, 2, Champs Elysees {GB}-- Vas Y Carla, by Gone West), sent off at 14-1, was slowly away from her wide post, but unhurried as she made her own way into mid-division racing wide without cover. Tackling Ballybacka Queen (Ire) (Hurricane Run {Ire}) approaching the final furlong, the 14,000gns TATDEC weanling and €5,000 TATIRE yearling soon had her measure and was kept up to her work to score by a neck. Ballydoyle’s Snow (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a three-parts sister to Joanna (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), was heavily supported into 4-6 but, after traveling smoothly throughout, found only the one pace to be a non-threatening fifth. Avenue Gabriel becomes the first winner for her freshman sire (by Danehill), Canada’s 2009 Horse of the Year and a son of Juddmonte’s blue hen mare Hasili (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}). Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, €11,385. VIDEO, courtesy
