It had been something of a frustrating (read, very frustrating) early part of 2013 for Janis Whitham's Fort Larned (h, 5, E Dubai--Arlucea, by Broad Brush). The bay was set to make his first start since winning the GI Breeders' Cup Classic in the GII Gulfstream Park H. Mar. 9, but jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. ended up with a face full of dirt when his mount stumbled and threw him to the earth. After passing on that track's GIII Skip Away S. in favor of a few more weeks of recuperation time, Fort Larned was sent to Hot Springs for the GII Oaklawn H. Apr. 13, but he never really showed up on that occasion, finishing a well-beaten fifth. He stubbed his toe when only eighth to Ron the Greek (Full Mandate) in last year's GI Stephen Foster H., but the 5-year-old made no such mistakes this time, stamping his authority on this renewal. Ridden for speed, Fort Larned easily beat Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy) to the lead, covering the opening quarter in :23 3/5 and the half in a legitimate :46 4/5. Loping along on a long Hernandez rein, he cruised on a lonely lead into the stretch and immediately had Take Charge Indy off the bridle. Golden Ticket (Speightstown) ran on best of all from behind to round out the exacta and Ron the Greek rallied belatedly into third, but were no menace to Fort Larned, who scored by seven lengths. The final time of 1:47.45 was one-fifth of a second off the track record set by Victory Gallop in 1999.
