Discreet Marq donned cap and gown convincingly in her 5 1/2-furlong turf bow second out against fellow New York-breds for conditioner Jimmy Ryerson at the Spa in August, and upended open company in Aqueduct’s Lie Low S. three starts later that November. Subsequently transferred to Jane Cibelli, the homebred was third--one spot behind Wave Theory--in Gulfstream’s Ginger Brew S. on New Year’s Day, and did one better when beaten just a neck in that venue’s Sweetest Chant S. Jan. 27. The grey appeared on paper to be controlling speed here in her first try for Christophe Clement, and faced little resistance as she sauntered her way to the early lead. She posted splits of :25.57, 49.64 and 1:13.46 while receiving only token pressure from Kitten’s Queen (Kitten’s Joy), and was always doing plenty in the lane to hold off the somewhat erratically running Wave Theory. "That was the plan, not too much to say," winning rider Jose Lezcano said of his trip. "She broke good and was in the front. I waited for the final three-sixteenths to make a run, and she pulled out a win." Clement added, "I’m a very lucky man. She came to me at Payson Park 2 1/2 months ago. She’s trained very well from day one. It’s a bit ambitious to be here, but she was the only speed of the race and [owner Patricia Generazio] was really happy to take the shot. It worked out... She’s a top-class filly, I’m sure of it. We have many races on the turf coming along, so it’s going to be fun. Let’s enjoy it for today, and go from there."
