Aidan O’Brien already boasted nine renewals of this race, but he was not about to relax his iron grip and duly delivered Battle of Marengo to extend his tally to double figures. Last year’s G2 Beresford S. scorer has quickly become a colt to set a watch by, continuing his march towards Epsom with a comprehensive defeat of the subsequent G3 Sandown Classic Trial winner Sugar Boy (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) giving five pounds to that rival in the G3 Ballysax S. over this course and distance in the Apr. 14. Facing a classier type in the G1 Criterium International winner Loch Garman here, the subject of a recent Derby gamble and probably his stable’s number one for the blue riband was still able to master that imposing rival, who shares his stable with Dawn Approach (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}). Taking up the running after the first half mile, he had Bolger’s representative at work on the final turn and after gaining a near two-length advantage quickly, was able to hold that all the way to the line. "We were very, happy and he had to come here and have a good, clean blow," his trainer said. "He doesn’t do a lot in front and is a little bit idle, so he’ll be happy getting a lead. He has won making the running, but they get a bit lazy doing that all the time. He’s a well-balanced horse and the plan was always to come here for his trial." Team Valor’s G2 Futurity S. scorer First Cornerstone (Ire) (Hurricane Run {Ire}) was a late scratching due to a bad scope and trainer Andrew Oliver told PA Sport, "I’ve spoken with the owners and we just have to reappraise and see what our route is now. It is a huge disappointment. We were heading towards the Epsom Derby. It looks like he won’t get a run prior to that, so at this moment we have no firm plans. We just have to get the horse right again and find a race."
