Aubby K, tabbed a "TDN Rising Star" after airing by 15 1/2 lengths in her debut at Belmont in the fall of 2011, was fourth in the GII Pocahontas S. to end her juvenile campaign. The dark bay filly resurfaced to win a Gulfstream optional claimer the following March before running third in the May 28 GI Acorn S., fourth in the July 14 GII Delaware Oaks and eighth in the Aug. 25 GI Test S. She returned to the winner’s circle while making her 2013 bow in the Mar. 17 GII Inside Information S. last time out. Aubby K, making her first start on a sloppy track, chased pacesetting Jamaican Smoke (Latent Heat) through fractions of :22.40 and :45.31. She overtook the pacesetter at the top of the lane, gamely turned back the midstretch challenge of Burban and Holiday Soiree and forged clear to the wire.
"That filly’s got a great running style," said winning rider Edgar Prado. "She’s great out of the gate; you put her in contention and she does her thing. She’s a pretty easy horse to ride." Of the sloppy surface, Prado added, "It was kind of hard to know because she never ran on that kind of track. She handled it really well. She was running hard. When she got to the lead she started looking around a bit, but she was really good today."
Trainer Ralph Nicks was impressed with his charge’s effort. "She’s such a good horse she just keeps overcoming everything," Nicks said. "She’s such a stalker and has the turn of foot, she can press if she needs to or set off. It works well for her."
Owned and bred by Indiana real estate developer James Spence, Aubby K is a daughter of Spence’s graded stakes winner Lilly Capote (Capote). She is also the dam of graded stakes placed juveniles Mythical Pegasus (Fusaichi Pegasus) and Flying Pegasus (Fusaichi Pegasus) and the granddam of Grade I placed Lilly Carson (Carson City). She has an unraced juvenile filly, My Emmy Girl (Street Sense), and a Northern Afleet yearling colt. Lilly Capote’s second foal, America’s Storm (Storm Cat), was a $3.6-million Keeneland September yearling.
