Three-for-three on the lawn in 2011, Summer Front was second a year ago in Keeneland’s GIII Coolmore Lexington S. He returned to the sod after a failed dirt attempt in Belmont’s GII Peter Pan S. to take that venue’s GIII Hill Prince S. in June, and was an easy winner of Saratoga’s Duluth S. the following month. The bay stepped into the big leagues and beyond his preferred one-mile trip after that, and could no better than third in the GI Secretariat S. at Arlington in August or Belmont’s GI Jamaica H. in October. He finished his sophomore campaign with a sixth-place run in the GI Hollywood Derby Nov. 25, and came into this off a troubled third in a Gulfstream optional claimer Mar. 3. Summer Front hugged the hedge in midpack early as El Commodore carved out sensible splits. Full of run, but without room to do it along the home bend, the chalked tipped out into the three or four path at the head of the lane and leveled off in the final sixteenth to win comfortably.
