Lagging just one behind the record of seven renewals of this significant Derby pointer held by Jim Bolger prior to this running, Aidan O’Brien equaled that tally courtesy of a game performance by Battle of Marengo as that bright prospect defied a five-pound penalty in unsuitably testing ground. Kept wide off the rail and held up in fourth early by Joseph O’Brien, last year’s Listed Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Trial S. and G2 Beresford S. winner was sent past Sugar Boy and into the lead with over a quarter mile remaining. Despite finding it tough from there, the bay dug in to draw away from his spirited rival and provide his sire, who won this in 2001, with his first winner of the race. "We’re very happy with that, as it was heavy ground and it wasn’t ideal," the Ballydoyle conditioner said. "He always passed every test and is a lovely, relaxed horse who only does what he has to do. We’re thinking about coming back for the [May 12] G2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial and he’ll love better ground."
