Returning from his winter break having signed off with a workmanlike score in the G3 Diamond S. over an extended 10 furlongs on Dundalk’s Polytrack in October, the former Jean-Claude Rouget project Declaration of War was allowed to start as the second favorite after the significant rain prompted the ground to worsen. Positioned in third early by Joseph O’Brien, the bay--whose sole reversal came when fourth on his debut for Ballydoyle in the G3 Solonaway S. at The Curragh in September--swooped on the front end approaching the furlong pole and drew away to score with authority. "He is a big, powerful horse who has done very well over the winter and needed the run," Aidan O’Brien commented. "We were very worried about the ground, but he traveled very well and we’d have to be very happy. He was a very good horse before we got him and he had an easy time last year and learnt a bit. He is an exciting horse--the G1 Lockinge S. [at Newbury May 18] is the plan and he is a great-moving horse so better ground will suit." The winner is out of a half-sister to the dam of last year’s GI Belmont S. winner Union Rags (Dixie Union).
