Verrazano Stays Undefeated With Wood Memorial Victory

11th at AQUGI Wood Memorial ($1000k)  [1 1/8m]Winner: Verrazano, c, 3 by More Than Ready
Unbeaten "TDN Rising Star" Verrazano (More Than Ready) punched his ticket to the GI Kentucky Derby with a hard-fought 3/4-length victory in Saturday’s GI Wood Memorial S. at the Big A. Normandy Invasion (Tapit) got up for second by a neck over Vyjack (Into Mischief). "When you have horses like this, there’s only one result that’s satisfying so there’s a little more pressure in these situations," trainer Todd Pletcher said of Verrazano, who went off as the 4-5 chalk. "It’s more of a relief after the race than sometimes a celebration, but that’s a position you want to be in." A runaway debut winner at Gulfstream New Year’s day, he followed with a jaw-dropping 16 1/4-length tally in a $75,000 optional claimer going a mile in Hallandale Feb. 2. The Let's Go Stable, Michael Tabor, Mrs John Magnier and Derrick Smith colorbearer passed his first two-turn test with a professional three-length tally in the GII Tampa Bay Derby Mar. 9. "He hasn’t done anything wrong so far," Pletcher continued. "There’s some more preps to go, but I would say right now he’s the legitimate [Kentucky Derby] favorite."
