The TDN Topic is a new feature for the TDN, designed to examine a topic in racing from several different angles, and then seek comment from our readers. In each TDN Topic, we ask people with different perspectives—from both inside and outside the sport—to comment on a hot-button issue. Today, we start with whipping.

EMOLLIENT (f, 3, Empire Maker--Soothing Touch, by Touch Gold), a big-figure maiden winner at Belmont Sept. 30, stumbled at the start of the GII Demoiselle S. Nov. 24 at Aqueduct and settled for second to Unlimited Budget (Street Sense) in her most recent appearance. For most of the opening seven furlongs of this allowance not a whole lot went according to plan for the Juddmonte colorbearer, but she found room turning for home and outfinished a stubborn Majestic River (A.P. Indy) to score as the 1-2 chalk. Ground-saving, but in some traffic around the clubhouse turn, Emollient made a middle move and tried to sneak through inside of Majestic River at the five-eighths, but couldn't quite make it. She was shuffled back a bit approaching the lane, but Joel Rosario kept the filly's mind on business and she drove clear late to take it by 3/4 of a length. Lifetime Record: GSP, 4-2-2-0, $132,900.
