FORMATIVE (f, 4, Dynaformer--Formal Approval, by Kingmambo) kicked off her career in 2011 with a pair of fourth place efforts going this distance on the turf at Saratoga July 28 and Sept. 4. The latter race proved a productive one, turning out Grade I winners Karlovy Vary (Dynaformer) and Lady of Shamrock (Scat Daddy), as well as graded winner Dancing Solo (Giant’s Causeway), Grade I-placed Heart of Destiny (Lion Heart), and a handful of other graded placed horses. Formative had not been seen since that start, however, and was sent off at 11-1 for her first start in 18 months. Grabbing the lead at the break, Formative dueled with Unavailable (Distorted Humor) through opening fractions of 23 3/5 and 46 4/5. She began to pull away from that rival at the half-mile pole, and distanced herself from the field by three lengths heading into the turn. She lengthened her advantage in the lane, and held off a belated rally from Medea (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) to win by three lengths. Unavailable faded to last.
