Believe You Can annexed the GII Fair Grounds Oaks last March on her way to a determined victory in the GI Kentucky Oaks at Churchill May 4. Brereton Jones’s homebred got off to a poor start in the GI Mother Goose S. at Belmont June 23 before eventually finishing a non-threatening third. That was it for her sophomore campaign, but she was widely expected to triumph in this seasonal opener. Rider Rosie Napravnik settled the favorite into any easy rhythm on the front end, and she cruised through six panels in 1:13.02.
