Will Take Charge, a maiden winner at Keeneland in his second start, was a thoroughly beaten 13th in the Nov. 24 GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. before a runner-up effort in the Dec. 9 Springboard Mile S. at Remington Park last time out. The strapping chestnut broke from the outside and was caught six wide into the first turn. He settled off the pace while still racing wide and shadowed Texas Bling as that foe moved to the lead on the far turn. Those two battled down the lane with Will Take Charge just eking out a determined victory, while Always in a Tiz closed to finish third in a blanket finish. Will Take Charge’s victory gave trainer D. Wayne Lukas his second sophomore stakes victory of the holiday weekend, following Oxbow (Awesome Again)’s runaway triumph in the GIII LeComte S. at Fair Grounds Saturday.
