With the presence of Grade I winner Willy Beamin in the GIII Discovery H. at Aqueduct, Marc Ferrell's Called to Serve was let go at odds of 7-2. That price looked like good value when the 3-year-old gelding overtook the heavy favorite at the top of the stretch with a near last-to-first move to earn his first graded victory. A maiden winner at Santa Anita in April, Called to Serve cleared his first allowance condition in his next start at Betfair Hollywood Park May 28. Fifth in his graded stakes debut in the GII Swaps S. over that strip July 4, he returned a month later to finish third in the GII West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer. After another third-place effort in the Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park Sept. 30 behind Politicallycorrect (Kitten's Joy) and Willy Beamin, the dark bay was transferred from trainer Peter Eurton to the barn of Nick Canani. In his first start for that stable he finished second, beaten a nose, by Our Entourage (Street Cry {Ire}) in the Temperence Hill S. at Belmont Oct. 21. Breaking towards the back of the pack, Called to Serve was content to travel off the rail in the rear early with just Stephanoatsee behind him through tepid early fractions. Moving up to challenge on the outside rounding the turn, Called to Serve made a sweeping four-wide bid to pass Willy Beamin at the top of the stretch. He lengthened his lead under a hand ride to win with ease. "It was easy for me," said winning jockey Joel Rosario. "I just had to put him in the right spot. He was all game today. Every time I asked him, he was there. I like to ride that kind of horse."
