TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

A winner and Group 3-placed in four European appearances for Criquette Head-Maarek, Starformer took an 11-furlong Gulfstream allowance Feb. 20, but failed badly in a single attempt on dirt, finishing last of seven at Churchill May 23. She returned from a two-month absence to set leisurely fractions en route to a three-length score in the GIII Robert G. Dick Memorial S. at Delaware July 14, but was an excuse-free second to Kissable (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) in Saratoga's Waya S. going this trip Sept. 3. She was entered in, but ultimately scratched from the GI Flower Bowl Invitational Sept. 29 when the ground became too soft and was re-routed for Keeneland's GI Spinster S. Oct. 7, finishing a decent fourth in the event sponsored by her owner. The main speed of this heat on paper, Starformer was sent to the front from her inside draw and set glacial fractions of :25.27 and :52.37 while kept well off the inside by Edgar Prado. She covered the first half of the journey in 1:18.13 and positions were mostly unchanged until Kissable and Mystical Star took cracks at her to her inside entering the far turn. She opened a touch of daylight midway on the bend, came wide into the drive and never would let Mystical Star get by her in the final stages. "It's been raining and snowing, and a lot of the water goes to the inside," Prado said of his decision to keep Starformer wide. "I had the number one post position, so I had to come running out of there and take her to the outside. It seemed like the plan worked out beautiful. She was happy up there, enjoying the trip, and when the other horse came to her she felt the other horse and picked it up at the end."
