The lightly campaigned Buffum has flashed hints of brilliance throughout his career, posting a 10-length allowance win during the 2011 Saratoga meeting and an eight-length optional claiming score earlier this term at Belmont in late May, and finally put it all together when it mattered most against stakes competition here. Freshened following a sixth-place finish in the nine-furlong GII Suburban H. July 7, the bay took steady money on the turn back in distance. Hustled to the front from his rail draw, Buffum was pestered by Associate through fractions of :22.55 and :45.24, and kept on finding more in the stretch to keep Little Drama safe. "It was just a matter of being patient with him," trainer Tom Albertrani said. "The timing was good, and he was doing so well coming into the race. He definitely runs well fresh, and it was the right timing to lead him over. After the Suburban, we naturally were a little disappointed and we backed off him for a little while. I would definitely consider the [GI] Cigar Mile [at Aqueduct Nov. 24]. That would be our next goal."
