TDN MAGAZINE, As the Science Gets Better, Catching the Cheats Becomes Easier: Part V of A Painful Truth: No matter the sport, cheaters have always stayed one step ahead of those trying to catch them by doping with as-yet undetectable products. But what if authorities didn't need to determine what the products were, only what the specimin should look like if unaltered by any drug? Meet the biological passport, and Travis Tygart, the man who has successfully routed out two of sports' most defiant cheats, Lance Armstrong and Marion Jones, neither of whom had ever tested positive. This event was viewed by most as a veritable walkover for unbeaten Uncaptured (Lion Heart), but it turned out to be a graduation celebration for River Seven, third in the June 30 Clarendon S. and second in the July 28 Vandal S. behind the heavy favorite in his first two tries. The bay went down himself at odds-on at the hooves of Tesseron when stretched out and dropped into the maiden ranks here Sept. 3, but he'd exact his revenge on that rival here as well. Stalking comfortable splits set by Five Iron (Sharp Humor) while kept off the rail, River Seven ranged up to challenge that foe at the top of the lane with the favorite and Tesseron not far behind in the three and four paths, respectively. The seam between River Seven and Tesseron closed on Uncaptured--who already appeared beaten--past the sixteenth pole, and the former kept finding more to earn his diploma and a first black-type tally. A claim of foul by Uncaptured's rider Patrick Husbands against the winner was disallowed.
