Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence took a wacky renewal of this event last year with Al Stall, Jr. trainee Animal Spirits (Arch), and they returned to the winner's circle here after another wild stretch drive. Balance the Books came up a half-length short after flying home late when unveiled over the Saratoga lawn Aug. 4, and earned his diploma the hard way when running down yesterday's GI Dixiana Breeders' Futurity winner Joha (Johar) in the Spa's GII With Anticipation S. Aug. 30. That flattering result and the expected pace scenario cut Balance the Books's off odds to a fifth of what he was on the morning line, and he overcame some adversity to justify top billing. Pinched back sharply at the start, the bay loped along at the back of the pack early behind solid splits. He was produced in upper stretch, and lugged in a bit, brushing with another rival as a chain reaction caused by an erratic Really Sharp (Sharp Humor) caused a pile-up at the sixtheeth pole. Balance the Books and pilot Julien Leparoux quickly righted the ship, however, and closed furiously in the shadow of the wire to nip Really Sharp. The unofficial runner-up was disqualified to sixth. "He's a wonderful horse, wonderful owners--Seth Klarman and Bill Lawrence," winning trainer Chad Brown said. "[He's a] Keeneland sales grad--we got him here in the spring and brought him back here and won a stakes. It's been great." Balance the Books is out of a daughter of Irish and German champion Kooyonga (Ire) (Persian Bold {Ire}).
