TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Neck 'n Neck remained on the edges in graded stakes tries leading up to the GI Kentucky Derby, but put it all together when he romped home a 6 1/2-length victor in a Churchill allowance May 10. He followed that up with an equally emphatic score in the GIII Matt Winn S. back under the Twin Spires June 16, but couldn't down subsequent GI Travers S. winner Alpha (Bernardini) when second in the sloppy GII Jim Dandy S. at Saratoga July 28. The homebred was looking to bounce back from a rough-trip sixth in the Aug. 25 "Midsummer Derby," and bounce back he did. Content to caboose the field early as Fed Biz dueled on the lead, Neck 'n Neck rapidly picked off horses on the far turn, but had to spin seven wide for clear sailing at the top of the lane. He continued his relentless advance to blow past Fed Biz at the sixteenth pole, and held off late-running "TDN Rising Star" Bourbon Courage to give pilot Brian Hernandez, Jr. an Oaks/Derby double.
