TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Dixie Union's Overanalyze Gives Pletcher Belmont Stakes Sweep in GII Futurity

9th at BELGII Futurity S.  [6f]Winner: Overanalyze, c, 2 by Dixie Union

With the well-stocked arsenal of juveniles at Todd Pletcher's disposal, it should have come as no surprise that Repole Stable's Overanalyze (Dixie Union) would follow in the hoofsteps of Matron winner Kauai Katie two races later in the GII Futurity S. That the winner would pay $13.60? Well, the bettors must have outsmarted themselves. Away sluggishly and caboosing the field early, Overanalyze began to come alive on the turn as four foes were lined up across the track vying for the lead. He was tipped out to the five path by pilot John Velazquez, and kept plugging away to blow past Carried Interest (Henny Hughes) for a convincing 3 1/4-length success. Favored Weekend Hideaway (Speightstown) settled for third in his first try outside of New York-bred company. "He didn't break," explained Velazquez. "I'm thinking he'll come out of there running, and he's on the bit and then the gate opened and the horse next to me went 'vroom.' He closed up really good. You have to be happy with the way he did it. He took a little dirt and came running. He did it really good."

Overanalyze was one of 16 2-year-old debut winners for Pletcher when he scored by 1 1/4 lengths with an 85 Beyer Speed Figure upstate Aug. 9. He chased an above-average pace last time in that venue's seven-furlong GII Three Chimneys Hopeful S. Sept. 3, and settled for fourth behind impressive stablemate Shanghai Bobby (Harlan's Holiday). "We were hoping to maybe be in a stalking-type position, but he didn't break great, then he got clobbered at the start and ended up way back," Pletcher said. "He recovered well and was running into the dirt, kept coming, showed a new dimension, finished really well and galloped out strongly. It was a pretty encouraging race." The conditioner was noncommital as far as a tilt at the Breeders' Cup, saying, "We'll see. We have a few things to figure out with a few of these [2-year-olds] and see how he comes out of it and go from there." Pletcher and Repole came out on the losing end of a close one with Stay Thirsty (Bernardini) in yesterday's GI Jockey Club Gold Cup. Overanalyze is a half-sister to Meadow Breeze (Meadowlake), who was a 34-1 upset winner of the Matron S. when it was a Grade I contested at seven furlongs in 2006.
